    Long-term care

    Basic principles

    Compulsory social insurance financed by social contributions and by a state contribution, providing benefits to all persons recognised as being dependent, regardless of age, income or residence.

    Benefits under the dependency insurance are provided in kind. Benefits in kind can be partially converted into cash benefits. The person may opt to receive mixed benefits (combination of benefits in kind and cash benefits).

    Informal caregivers and professional providers

    Professional providers:

    The dependency insurance provides for four types of professional providers:

    ·    assistance and care networks;

    ·    semi-stationary centres;

    ·    assistance and care institutions for continuous stay;

    ·    assistance and care institutions for intermittent stay.

    Providers within the dependency insurance must have received an approval from the competent ministry which allows them to pursue activities in the field of assistance and care. In addition, they must, by signing an assistance and care agreement, adhere to the framework convention setting out their rights and obligations.

    Informal caregivers:

    The assistance and care can be supplied to the dependent person by one or more persons in his social circle who are able to provide the necessary asistance and care. These persons can include family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. It may also be a person whom the dependant person remunerates as an employee.

    Compulsory social insurance scheme financed by contributions with a participation of the state budget for the active population (employees and self-employed) with benefits depending on the duration of the affiliation (flat-rate) and on contributions (earnings-related).

    Benefits for older unemployed

Early retirement measures are also applied in case of night- and shift-work. The compensation is paid by employers and partially reimbursed by the employment fund.
