  • Long-term care and the situation of social workers

    Country

    United Kingdom

    Long-term care

    Basic principles

Non-contributory, state-financed system providing cash benefits and benefits in kind (social care) for elderly or disabled persons and their carers.

Local authorities are responsible for identifying the needs of their local population and commissioning services to meet them. Services are delivered through the public, private and voluntary sector.

    Long-term care

    Field of application

All residents with an unrestricted right to remain in the UK who have care needs.

    Organisation of Long-term care

    Informal caregivers and professional providers

Formal social care is provided in people’s own homes, care homes, day care, hospitals, and in the wider community through the public, private and voluntary sectors.
Discretionary informal care may be provided by spouses/partners, family members or other friends/relatives.

    Long-term care

    Benefits for the carer

Carer's Allowance is payable to help people who look after someone who is disabled. They do not have to be related to, or live with, the person that they care for.
    Amount: GBP58.45 (€73) a week.

    Long-term care

    User charges

For residential care in England, people with assets (including the value of the family home) over GBP 23,250 (€28,966) receive no financial state support and have to fund their own care. The level and type of state support for people with assets below this threshold depends on their needs and income.
People with non-residential care needs who receive care or other services from the local authority have to pay reasonable charges, depending on ability to pay and at the discretion of the local authority.
